The jobs agenda: There’s no greater priority right now

By John Winter,
President & CEO, BC Chamber of Commerce

As world leaders grapple with another global economic downturn, the jobs agenda must be front and centre for all BC politicians, regardless of their political stripes or level of government.

That’s especially true for municipal politicians, who have been meeting this week at the Union of BC Municipalities convention.  Now more than ever, they need to appreciate that it’s a dynamic private sector – not bigger government – that creates the jobs and supports the services that communities like this one need to thrive.

As civic election races take shape, voters should ask their candidates about their vision for growing the local economy.  All too often, our member businesses – BC’s job creators – tell us they’re stymied by local government.  By miring job creators in bureaucratic red tape, unfair taxation and lengthy review processes, economic opportunities will simply go elsewhere. Fellow BC Chamber Board Member Dan McLaren instrumental to Prince George revival

WOW! Think about it—the world’s largest wooden building (Wood Innovation & Design Center)…how cool is that! This is a great day for Prince George. This is a great day for British Columbia.

While the announcement was pretty straight forward (10-story. Iconic. Old PGH site. Construction 2012. Completion 2014).The vision, commitment and tenacity of our team continues to be, in my opinion, the catalyst for our city’s meteoric urban redevelopment. Perhaps it is timely to review the significant achievements that have been made in less than 29-months.

There is much to be proud of:

1)     The former gaming centre has been purchased and converted to the city’s finest professional building. Our building is beautiful.

2)     Our Health Center will house BC’s very first major Unattached Patient Clinic – providing primary health care to 6,500 British Columbians – that were previously without a physician. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently attended the BC Chamber of Commerce annual convention and worked very hard not to print out the stacks of paper associated with policies, agendas, and the like. It was a very successful exercise for me, and I used my iPad for a number of functions including sourcing an optometrist to do a quick fix on my glasses. Read the rest of this entry »
